The problem
The constraints fight each other.
Building call by hand takes a weekend, and still produces someone covering Christmas twice in three years. Honor one physician's time off and you break the weekend balance. Fix the balance and you create a back-to-back. Every correction moves the problem somewhere else.
What it enforces
Rules your group actually runs on.
Weekend blocks stay whole
You define what a weekend means for your practice — Thursday through Sunday, Friday through Sunday, whatever you actually run. Blocks are assigned entire. Nobody gets half a weekend.
Holidays rotate year over year
A holiday locks the surrounding block to one physician, and the assignment moves through the group so the same person doesn't keep drawing the same holiday. Thanksgiving runs Wednesday through Sunday. Christmas and New Year's are handled as full blocks, including the one that crosses into January.
No back-to-back weekends
Two weekends in a row is detected and reassigned — including a first weekend that runs up against last year's final weekend, which is nearly impossible to catch by hand.
Time off is honored, or explained
Everyone's unavailable dates go in once. Where a request genuinely cannot be met, the schedule says so beside the date rather than quietly producing something wrong.
Honest limits
Some years can't be solved perfectly.
Parivance resolves conflicts where a resolution exists. Sometimes one doesn't — three physicians away the same week, or a holiday that falls so that a back-to-back weekend is unavoidable. When that happens it tells you, rather than burying it.
What the report tells you
- What the conflict is — the type of problem, and how many of them there are
- Who and when — the physician affected and the exact dates, so you can go straight to the rows and decide
- Whether it was fixable — the run says when it stopped because no better schedule exists for that year, so you know a conflict is structural rather than something worth re-running for
The remaining conflicts are yours to settle — usually one phone call to whoever is easiest to move. Parivance's job is to get you down to the handful that need a human, not to pretend there are none.
